What Is DIM?
DIM is a plant compound produced when you digest indole-3-carbinol (I3C), found naturally in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. When you eat these foods, stomach acid converts I3C into DIM during digestion. The amount produced from food sources is relatively small — a DIM supplement provides a standardized, concentrated amount that would be impractical to get from diet alone in meaningful quantities.
DIM has been studied for its influence on how the body processes estrogen — specifically the pathways through which estrogen is metabolized.* This is distinct from adding estrogen or blocking it. DIM’s studied mechanism relates to how existing estrogen is processed by the liver.*
What the Research Explores
The research on DIM in women focuses primarily on estrogen metabolism pathways.* Studies have explored DIM’s influence on the ratio of different estrogen metabolites in pre-menopausal and peri-menopausal women, and in women managing hormonal symptoms.* DIM has also been explored in research relating to PMS, hormonal acne, and cycle regularity — areas where estrogen metabolism plays a role.* The research is ongoing and the findings are encouraging; as with most botanical research, large-scale human trials continue to build the evidence base.*
Why Bioavailability Matters — And Why We Include Black Pepper
Plain DIM has relatively poor bioavailability on its own — it isn’t easily absorbed through the gut without assistance. Many DIM products on the market contain DIM alone, which limits how much actually reaches your system. This is why formulation matters as much as the ingredient itself.
Black pepper extract (standardized for piperine) is one of the most studied bioavailability enhancers in supplement science. Piperine has been shown to influence the absorption of multiple compounds by affecting certain metabolic enzymes.* Including it alongside DIM is a functional formulation decision, not a marketing one — the absorption data supports it.*
Our DIM Estrogen Balance contains 300mg DIM per capsule with Black Pepper Fruit Extract — no proprietary blends, no hidden fillers, just DIM at a meaningful dose with absorption support.*
How DIM Fits Into a Women’s Wellness Routine
DIM works well alongside other women’s hormonal wellness botanicals. Vitex chasteberry has a long traditional history of use for cycle regularity and hormonal balance — it works through a different pathway than DIM, which is why they’re often discussed together.* Shatavari is an Ayurvedic botanical traditionally associated with women’s hormonal wellness.*
Our Vitex + DIM + Shatavari combines all three in one formula.* Full guide: Vitex, DIM & Shatavari: Why We Combined These Three.*
