Arnica montana is a yellow-flowered mountain plant with one of the longest histories of topical use in Western herbal medicine — and one of the more substantive modern research bases for a botanical ingredient. What Arnica Montana Is

Arnica montana is a perennial herb native to the mountain meadows of central Europe, traditionally found in alpine regions from Siberia to the Pyrenees. Its bright yellow daisy-like flowers are the primary source of the medicinal extracts — containing sesquiterpene lactones (primarily helenalin), flavonoids, phenolic acids, and essential oils that account for its studied biological activity.*

Arnica has been used topically in European herbal medicine since at least the 16th century for bruising, muscle soreness, and joint discomfort — one of the earliest documented medicinal uses of any botanical.* It is approved by the German Commission E (Germany’s equivalent of the FDA’s botanical review body) for topical use for bruising, blood clots, sprains, and rheumatic muscle and joint complaints.*

How It Works: Studied Mechanisms

Arnica’s primary studied active compounds are the sesquiterpene lactones — particularly helenalin and dihydrohelenalin.* These compounds inhibit NF-κB activation, a central regulator of the inflammatory cascade, and inhibit platelet aggregation.* The anti-inflammatory mechanism explains Arnica’s studied effectiveness for post-exercise muscle soreness and post-traumatic bruising — both of which involve inflammatory processes.* The platelet aggregation inhibition is thought to underlie its effects on bruising and swelling.*

What Randomized Controlled Trials Have Found

Muscle Soreness After Exercise

Pumpa et al. (2014, European Journal of Sport Science) examined topical Arnica in well-trained men after intense exercise. The Arnica group showed significantly lower muscle soreness scores at 24 and 48 hours post-exercise compared to placebo.* Creatine kinase (a marker of muscle damage) also showed a trend toward lower elevation in the Arnica group.* This is one of the stronger trials on Arnica for exercise recovery.*

Post-Surgical Bruising

Multiple trials have examined Arnica in surgical patients — particularly in rhinoplasty (nose surgery) patients where bruising is a significant post-operative concern. Chaiet and Marcus (2016) conducted a systematic review finding consistent evidence that Arnica reduced post-surgical bruising severity and resolution time across multiple trials.* The effect was most pronounced when Arnica was used both pre- and post-operatively.*

Osteoarthritis

Knuesel et al. (2002) compared topical Arnica to diclofenac (a pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory) in patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee over 6 weeks. Arnica gel performed comparably to diclofenac gel on pain and function scores, with a comparable adverse effect profile.* This trial is notable for using an active pharmaceutical comparator rather than placebo.*
