What MSM Is
Methylsulfonylmethane is an organic sulfur compound — sulfur bonded to a methyl group in a stable, bioavailable form. Sulfur is an essential element involved in the formation of connective tissue, collagen synthesis, and a range of other structural and functional roles in the body.* MSM is the most common form of supplemental organic sulfur, and is produced through a reaction involving DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) and hydrogen peroxide.* Despite its chemical origins, it is widely considered safe and well-tolerated in the research literature.*
What the Research Has Explored
Joint Support
The most substantial clinical research on MSM focuses on osteoarthritis and joint pain. Kim et al. (2006, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage) published a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in adults with knee osteoarthritis, finding that MSM supplementation at 3g twice daily for 12 weeks was associated with significant improvements in pain and physical function scores compared to placebo.* Debbi et al. (2011) found similar results in a subsequent trial, with MSM showing significant pain reduction and functional improvement in knee OA patients.*
Exercise Recovery
Research has also examined MSM in the context of exercise-induced muscle damage and recovery. Nakhostin-Roohi et al. (2011, Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences) found that MSM supplementation before exercise was associated with reduced markers of oxidative stress and muscle damage compared to placebo in trained men after exhaustive exercise.* Withee et al. (2017) examined MSM in a physically active population and found reduced muscle soreness and fatigue after exercise.* These findings have driven interest in MSM among active women focused on recovery.*
Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Multiple in vitro and animal studies have explored MSM’s anti-inflammatory properties, finding inhibition of NF-κB activation and reductions in pro-inflammatory cytokine production.* Human clinical research on inflammatory markers has been more limited in scale but directionally consistent with the laboratory findings.* The anti-inflammatory research provides mechanistic context for MSM’s studied effects on joint pain and exercise recovery.*
